Perhaps all popular browsers are interpreting RE incorrectly, but not all browsers. SGML based browsers would not treat the REs in your example as significant. I suspect the broken browsers would also handle the following improperly: <pre> This text, including é , should display as one line. </pre> Entity references may be terminated by refc or RE, in which case RE is to be suppressed.
