FRONT PAGE  - Portugal Faces New Nuclear Hazards

Two armed British merchant ships carrying a deadly cargo of weapons grade
radioactive plutonium passed through a corridor between the islands of
Madeira and the Azores on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, it has
emerged that the stricken British nuclear submarine undergoing repairs at
Gibraltar could pass through Portuguese waters in May, reports Siobhan
Mitchell.

Swissair cold feet could stop TAP from running

Swissair's proposed purchase of 34 percent of Portuguese airline carrier TAP
was this week flung into further doubt when the Swiss carrier's new
management revealed it had serious reservations of carrying through the
proposed deal. Conflicting reports emanated from various quarters this week
following the news of Swissair's possible withdrawal from its life-saving
deal with TAP.

BSE numbers rise again

The incidence of BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis) rose during the month
of December, breaking the trend of earlier months were numbers showed a
steady reduction. According to EU figures, the incidence of the disease
climbed from 161.6 per million animals to 173. Meanwhile, the EU has
revealed that a decision on whether or not to lift the Portuguese beef
embargo will be made on February 20.

offices throughout the country, as illegal immigrants waited in anticipation
to take advantage of Portugal's new and controversial laws regulating their
presence in the country.

Metro halts as people are driven from their homes

Already over a year behind schedule, the work on Oporto's metro is once more
at a standstill amid fears over public safety. With this weekend's public
announcement of the exorbitant salaries being demanded by the board of
administrators, it seems this recent addition to the metro's catalogue of
errors couldn't have come at a worse time.

Three games in six days between FC Porto and Benfica is enough to quench any
supporter's appetite for enthralling football. From last Wednesday to this
