FWIW, in answer to the question "is this supported", your syntax does 
follow the pattern described in appendix B.4:

It seems like a bug in our code.  At least I could recreate your issue 
with a testcase that I think is valid (fails in our code, works in 
Orbeon).  I opened a bug on it ->
