We've also found that having itemset and item label and value respect
the :disabled pseudo-property to be quite useful and I would encourage
other XForms implementations to follow this interpretation of the XForms
1.0 recommendation.

That's right. However, it does work with formsPlayer version 2, since
the UI architecture is completely different, and much more flexible. A
preview of fP:2.0 is available on our site as part of the Sidewinder
Viewer preview. We will shortly be releasing a beta.
