Well, I think it is because the servers have a lot of load. Currently the server www4mail@wm.ictp.trieste.it handles above 3500 mails daily. If your site is on a slow connection, then it would take a while, for sites with a fast link to the INTERNET, the average time should be between 1 to 4 hours.
