By removing the intermediate </ol> <ol>
you have placed a <p>...</p> within the ordered list.
This is illegal unless the <p> is also inside an <li>.

Curiously both Safari and Firefox on MacOS 10.6 
render your example as you intended, graceful failure
in the face of incorrect markup...
