Bingo! I got it. Thank you so much Vadim. The trick was to do as you said and use the synaptics package manager to remove all the previous Amaya files, and then alt+f2, gksudo nautilus, hit enter and then browse to the amaya package for ubuntu which I downloaded from the link posted in this thread, doulbe click it and it fired right up. BTW: Amaya 11 is WAY nicer than 9.5! Thank you again, I'll file the solution on the launchpad bugs forum, and write up a little step by step instruction sheet for the recipe.
