To insert an image you have to put the insert point (in a paragraph by example) and click on the image button. A dialog pops up and you can browse or insert the URI of the image. An alternate text is mandatory and you cannot close the dialog as long as the alternate text is given. To insert a background image, you have to select an element. Click within the element text then use F2 to go up (the bottom line display the selected element and enclosing elements). Select the menu entry Style>Background image, then fill the dialog box.
