just an observation, that MacOS-X using Apple-X11 or X-Free86,
had bad font rendering with OpenOffice.org, even while other
X11 apps were OK

Solution, with OpenOffice running, set the X11 color depth
to "millions", not "auto from display", then restart X11.

might be worth a look...
