Shorter and maybe faster binaries

When I compile the latest CVS code on my Debian 3.1 Stable machine, I
get an Amaya binary of 28,122,338 bytes. Yet the binary distribution,
made hours ago, has a binary size of 10,399,112. I am following the
standard instructions and have not edited any files.

Does the way I compile lead to slower execution? If not, I don't mind
about the size. But if this way does lead to slower execution I would
like to know how to compile to a smaller and faster version.
