Re: notes from PF telecon 10 November 2004

I didn't see in here any reference to author identification such as copy
right but that might be in site info?

    new action items:
ACTION: Dave Pawson post to XTECH with compare/contrast (optionally
    merge) of the three sources

Posted here and xtech, unsure if other audiences needed.

action completed below.

Integrated page names vocabulary:
Based on:
DaveP submission: 22 October.
XHTML 2. proposals (banner, nav, main, content,content-info and search)
and http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk/archives/whats_in_a_name_pt2.html

Action item, pf telcon 10 November 04.

ac: Andy Clarke.
Under terms, options are listed in this order if available.
My proposal for adoption is marked proposal.

Most abstract groupings:

1. General content wrappers.

Terms: content content container
Proposal: content.

Definition:

A major block of text or other content of a page. Often the central
visual area of a page.

1.1 Minor wrappers for general content.

terms: section content-<other-term>
Proposal: section.
Rationale: if subscripts such as content-news are used,
we are into i18N debate.

Definition:

Could include any form of content, including content-news, content-related,
#content-quote etc. Lesser groupings or sub-groupings of content.

I suggested a lower level grouping in this category, not taken up
by either of the other options, hence dismissed.

2. Navigation.
terms: navigation, nav.
Proposal: navigation.

Definition: Used to contain any navigation device or feature.

2.1 Minor wrappers.

I proposed primary, secondary and contextual, Clarke proposes
sub-groupings, e.g. main, section, external, supplementary or
'other'. Telcon brought up on-site and off-site.

Terms. Many available. Propose that a single level be adopted,
i.e. not to take up any sub-division of navigation. Suggest we
consider levels by primary and secondary, or on and off using
something like contextual or local and remote. E.g. a table of
contents is likely to be contextual. A links area is likely to be
 off-site.

These could be mixed using nav-XXX, e.g.
nav-primary,
nav-secondary or
User data entry.
nav-contextual,
nav-offsite etc.

Definition: Navigational items having functionality other than that of
primary site navigation.

3. Site search.

terms: search, searchbox, search.
Proposal: search.

Definition: Any means provided to search the site contents.

4. Images.

terms: logo, branding, banner.
Proposal: branding.

Definition: Some visual means of identifying or branding a site.
May or may not include a strapline. May or may not be an image.

5. Advertising.

terms: Advertisement, content-products.
Proposal: advertisement.

Definition: Any content advertising products or services at other
sites.

6. Lesser matter, still very common.

6.1

terms: footer | header, siteinfo, content-info??
Proposal: Unsure, siteinfo may not be in the footer.

Definition. Used for various site related information. Typically
visually separated from the remainder of the page. Often common across
many pages of a site.

6.2 Other items common on websites, but minor related to those above.

terms: Header,

Visually separated top of page content.

terms: page titles.

Visually significant content, often closely aligned to majority function
of a webpage.

terms: Image.

Visual only content. Could this be grouped with such as flash or
quicktime or other embedded content into some other term?

Addional unplaced terms.

breadcrumb trails, pop-up content, tooltips.
