HEART of the BEHOLDER Movie Update - Sept 2005 ======================================================= 1. Screenings and Film Festivals 2. Amazon.com - Good News/Bad News 3. Attacking the Movie ======================================================= Screening and Film Festivals At the invitation of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Film Festival in London, we screened HOTB on July 8 & 9 to a packed house. It was very strange coming to a city that had just been bombed by religious terrorists to screen a film about religious terrorism. Many thanks to Cherry Bennet for helping us screen to a great audience. http://www.galha.org/events/film.html St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase - July 17 We screened HOTB in St. Louis and we were awarded the Critics Choice Award for Best Feature Film. We also held a public panel discussion on the events depicted in the movie. The panel consisted of news anchor Dick Ford, former Post-Dispatch movie reviewer Joe Pollack, Post-Dispatch reporter Michael Sorkin, myself and the writer/director Ken Tipton. Sorkin and Pollack made more information known about the former Prosecutor, George Peach, than had been previously reported. He embezzled more than $200,000 from the Crime Victims Fund but received a suspended sentence while one of the Madams got 10 years in jail for not reporting taxes from her escort business. Background information is not on the Internet because these things happened between 1988 and 1992. The information is available by searching the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper archives for Video Library or George Peach. Many of the former employees of Video Library and customers spoke about the harassment Video Library went through because of the harassment by followers of Rev. Donald Wildmon's "National Federation for Decency" which is now called the American Family Association at AFA.net. Recently a movie reviewer questioned the way some of the zealots were portrayed as being "stupid". The scenes were based on real incidents and their stupidity hasn't changed much over then years as shown in this press release claiming that you can get AIDS and Hepatitis from renting movies at the #2 video chain, Movie Gallery. The best part of the panel discussion was a small group of people that kept quiet during the discussion but then came and talked to us afterward. They were members of the Mid-Rivers Baptist Church from St. Peters, MO, as well as former members of Rev. Wildmon's NFD. They had picketed the Video Library stores and the home of the owner in the past and apologized for their actions. Talk about what goes around comes around! Our Next Screenings - We are screening at three film festivals over the next five weeks. The screening dates and times are posted on their websites or will be posted shortly. The bad news is that Amazon.com will not offer our movie on VHS and they won't allow us to manufacture our own DVD and have them handle the fulfillment. Amazon.com will only market our DVD in their "On-Demand" program which means that when an order comes in, they will burn the DVD and package it for shipment. That's not a bad thing and it means that they won't have to warehouse and track DVD inventory. What's bad about it is that we have over 7,000 DVDs already made and warehoused there for shipment. We have until October 1st to either sell them or pick them up. Now is the time we really need your help, especially from those you have actually seen the movie. Until Oct. 1st, we are selling the DVD with either $5 off or have $5 dollars donated for every DVD sold to the Council for Secular Humanism. Many of you know that the CSH has not only supported our movie, but that we shot much of it at the Center for Inquiry in Los Angeles where we used Humanists as religious protestors in the movie. A little ironic but very fun! DJ Grothe has been a big supporter also because he comes from the town where this movie took place and in his younger days, DJ WAS a religious fundamentalist! But occasionally we get reports of derogatory posts in forums and BLOGS. When we confront the posters, it turns out that real names were not used and the email address bounces back. The Internet is a wonderful way to communicate, but there are also a lot of people who post innuendo, half-truths, and worse. I don't hide behind a false name or email address that bounces.
