Re: Sign Language for audio and video on the web

Hi John,

Thank you very much for the input. Replies and questions below:

> About the “Introduction,” I suggest text that explains relying upon lip reading is insufficient.

OK.

> I suggest you add hard-of-hearing such that, for example, “Sign language is the native language of many people are Deaf” becomes “Sign language is the native language of many people who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing”.

OK. Will do (in most places).

This resource is intended to provide practical guidance for current capabilities.

Currently for pre-recorded videos, is sign language provided in a separate video -- that is the main video with sign language overlay? Are there other ways to provide sign language with videos on the web?

> * Provide the capability of turning sign language on/off any time.

How? Is this available in any current media players?

> * Provide the capability to combine signing with closed captioning.

Is there a way not to do this -- if you've followed the advice throughout this resource? There is a captions file and the media player provides access to it. It would be available with the sign language version as well.

I do think I'll mention in the page that some users will want both at the same time.

> * Provide the capability to position the sign language inset.

This is not available in any current media players, right? (If so, we'll leave it out of this resource for now.)

Thanks in advance for followup information! :-)

Best,
~Shawn

Millions of people who are not completely deaf, even those using assistive technology, need to communicate via sign language.
