RE: Request for removal of animation

Eric –

· Q: Jumping to different points on a page without an animation are not an issue for you, right?

· A: Right. In fact, that’s what I’m requesting.

· Q: Would a slower animation be helpful or do you think this might not change anything at all?

· A: I believe a slower animation would still disturb me, but I don’t know that for certain. Depending on the scroll distance, however, the wait could become annoying.

Hi Charles,

thanks for writing in and sorry for your troubles. I developed the Quickref.

This is actually an interesting dilemma as other people might find the movement beneficial for spacial awareness.

Two quick questions that should help me to determine what to do next:

· Jumping to different points on a page without an animation are not an issue for you, right?

· Would a slower animation be helpful or do you think this might not change anything at all?

It looks like we either need to remove the animation at all or make it configurable.

Best,
Eric

It's both when I arrive at the page with an URL that has an anchor as well as when I click around the page using the sidebar. If I don't use the sidebar then I would have to know what I was looking for and search for it.

Ah, is the problem only when you first open the page? Or when you click around the page?

It only sort of meets my needs. While it acts as you describe.

1) I visit this content so rarely, that I am unlikely to remember that
I need to make those adjustments
2) Even if I would remember, I can't make those adjustments until I arrive at the page, so would need to kludge the URL to remove the anchor, then go to the page, then make the adjustments, then un-kludge the URL to restore the anchor, then re-go to the URL.

So, not really.

Dear Charles,

Thank you for your e-mail. I am sending this to the wai-eo-editors@w3.org<mailto:wai-eo-editors@w3.org> mailing list and we will log an issue as needed. I hope that we can come up with a good solution to meet multiple needs soon.

In the meantime, note that you can eliminate most (if not all) of the automated smooth scrolling by:
* Collapsing the "Sidebar" with the scrolling Contents. Click the [<Hide] button in the sidebar.
* Expanding all sections. Click the [+ Expand all sections] button in the pale yellow bar that goes across the page.

Perhaps this is sufficient to address your needs?

Regards,
~Shawn

Dear WAI Webmasters:

Automated smooth scrolling of large parts of the screen, such as that which occurs if I go to Visual Audio Contrast on the WCAG 2.0 Quick Ref https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG20/quickref/#visual-audio-contrast page, makes my eyes queasy. This effect is persistent for some time after encountering such animation if I don’t catch it and close my eyes, perhaps 15 to 30 minutes.

I wind up having to close my eyes each time I click a link. This is not an ideal way to experience the web.

Technically it is not a WCAG 2.0 violation because the animation lasts for less than 5 seconds.

I am requesting that the website be updated to not do this animation or to provide me a way to persistently defeat it without having to do so each time I click a link to that page.
