WAI Editors, For simplicity and consistency, we now propose using lowercase "web" throughout WAI documents. If you have questions or concerns with this, please call or e-mail me to discuss (consider off-list at first to avoid clutter). If no objections in 2 weeks, it will be adopted without further notice. As below: - This new style can be fairly loosely applied; for example, a proposal or report to a WAI funder could use the funder's preferred style. - We will not go back and edit most documents for the style change. We will just use it for new documents, or when updating documents for other reasons. Regards, ~Shawn -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Updating WAI style for "website", "web application", etc. Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2009 14:50:17 -0500 From: Shawn Henry <shawn@w3.org> To: wai-eo-editors <wai-eo-editors@w3.org> WAI Editors, The W3C Manual of Style is now updated to allow "web" lower case when used as an adjective, and "website" as one word.[1] WAI style is adopting the following: * "website" one word, lower case * "web xyz" lower case when used as an adjective, including: web developer, web project, web page, web application, web technologies, web content, etc. - NOTE: capitalize it in "Web accessibility" [discussion of why omitted, but happy to address if wanted] * "Web" capitalized when used as a short form of "World Wide Web", as in "It is vital that the Web is accessible" and also "We actively support Web accessibility". This new style can be fairly loosely applied; for example, a proposal or report to a WAI funder could use the funder's preferred style. We will not go back and edit most documents for the style change. We will just use it for new documents, or when updating documents for other reasons. Comments welcome. Regards, ~Shawn [1] http://www.w3.org/2001/06/manual/#Terms * Web (on its own) - always capitalize * Web (as part of a phrase) - either capitalize or lower case "Web" (e.g., Web developer or web developer, Web project or web project, Web page or web page, Web application or web application * Web page, web page - two words, either capitalize or lower case "Web" * Web site, web site, website - two words (capitalize or lower case "Web") or one (lower case)
