Verbosity preference

Hey,

does anyone know if there is any prefers-verbosity style http header/device
setting being discussed in WAI similar to prefers-reduced-motion, I am
working on an article showing the use of such a header but was wondering if
anything was already being done in the area.

The idea of the prefers-verbosity header is similar to the verbosity
settings of screen readers themselves but would be a way for the user to
specify how much of visually focused media and functionality needs to be
made available to the screen reader.

The idea from this was due to discussion with someone who seemed to prefer
much more information from the screen reader than I did, including alt text
on presentational images etc.
whereas I actually prefer only alt text on something where the context or
information in the image could not be inferred from the surrounding text -
for example a comic strip content might need to be described for me, but I
don't want to know that I am looking at the image of a particular product
when I am in the item in the grid where I can buy that particular product.

They would want a carousel of images to be available to them, I just want a
list of links in the carousel and nothing else.

As an example of what I mean -
4 settings "Site" - accept whatever the site has as their default

"verbose" alt text on everything, even if presentational, all visual
elements are available for interaction with the user via screen reader.
Example of presentation text you might get for an image with "verbose"
setting - "text divider, placed between stanzas of poem to reduce eye strain"

"medium" alt text on everything that has information in it not apparent
from the context - so a product image may have more data than the context -
Men's shoe large size CombiBrand Green stripe might be more information
than the actual purchase area in the grid. But images that are purely
presentational will not have something on them.

"low" alt text only on images that have something meaningful not in
context, witty full comic strip, technical diagram not represented in
surrounding text. all other images presentational and hidden. Visual
Interactivity needs to be labeled - like Menu open, Menu Close Button etc.
.

"None": the user of course expects to be able to use screen reader to read
text, or button labels and the like, but all aspects of visual
interactivity do not need to be specified, this is probably for users that
are dyslexic or have a reading comprehension issue but can understand the
context of an open menu or similar interactive elements.

Obviously this is not something that allows you to get out of your
obligations as a site, so site defaults should only be Verbose or Medium,
depending basically if they have a large number of presentation images or
similar elements.

Hope nobody is offended by this idea, I just find that many sites trying to
do the right thing by specifying everything tire me out but I realize I am
probably different than a lot of users.

Thanks,
Bryan Rasmussen
