Referring to WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide (Level A) https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/#pause-stop-hide where it describes auto-updating: Auto-updating: For any auto-updating information that (1) starts automatically and (2) is presented in parallel with other content, there is a mechanism for the user to pause, stop, or hide it or to control the frequency of the update unless the auto-updating is part of an activity where it is essential. It uses the term *ANY*, as in "For any auto-updating information ...". 1. So does this apply to a graph or data table that is auto-updated by software every hour? 2. Does it apply if it is auto-updated every 10 mins, giving the user time to read the graph or data table? 3. Does it apply to **any and all** auto-update data and content (except the essential exceptions)? There is a sufficient technique, but not a success criteria, that has a good example: G186: Using a control in the Web page that stops moving, blinking, or auto-updating content Example 2: Teleconferencing Tool A teleconferencing Web page displays a speaker queue of people who wish to speak. A checkbox on the page lets the user choose whether the display of the queue should be updated automatically when a new person is added or removed, or whether it should only be updated when the user presses the "Refresh" button. When the queue is being updated automatically, the Refresh button is deactivated. Some additional questions I have: So what is the frequency definition of "auto-update" and/or "animation"? (neither term is in the glossary) Blinking is defined, but when does 2.2.2 become applicable? At what auto-update frequency does there need to be a way for the user to pause, stop, or hide? How is animation and auto-update defined such that 2.2.2 becomes applicable? Could we apply the 20 hour rule for time limits to auto-updates? Such that 2.2.2 doesn't apply to content and data that is upated every 20 hours or more? Could we apply the 20 second rule for the user is to be warned before the auto-update occurs? If warned, do they still needs to be given at least 20 seconds to pause or stop the auto-update? ___________ Regards, Phill Jenkins See the new IBM Equal Access toolkit and accessibility checker at www.ibm.com/able linkedin.com/in/philljenkins/ www.ibm.com/able ageandability.com
