One important thing to do is to make sure the alternative small window is not fixed in size or position (which is a common fault in this kind of alternative display method). Allow the user full freedom to adjust the size etc to suit themselves - and make sure the video expands with the size of its window. That way, if a user can't see the captions they can make it larger. For instance someone might position it to take up all the top half of the screen, while they work in another window in the lower half.
