Re: Downloadable infographics

Great question about the thumbnail. I think it depends on context; if the thumbnail image is embedded in a bigger report, you might be able to wrap the descriptive link to view the full-sized infographic and detailed description around both thumbnail image and the link, so the alt could be “” since descriptive link would tell the user there’s an image with detailed description.

If it’s a thumbnail with the link underneath to view the larger version with descriptive text and the links are separate, then the ALT for the thumbnail might be the title of the infographic with a note that the description is on a separate page or follows or something…. For example, alt=”Infographic depicting American Stress Levels Post-Election, linked to full description”?

That’s if you aren’t able to create the infographics in HTML with CSS, though (since as Jonathan noted, would be more accessible than text in an image). There are some other ways to add and reference longer descriptions on the W3/WAI page at https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/images/complex/, too. Infographics are tricky, though! -amy

It looks like Amy has the highlights of the report written here,<https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2020/11/post-election-stress> and there’s a hyperlink from one of the stats. In the case of a thumbnail, I guess the alt text reference the URL of the infographic image + long description? I’m probably not best equipped to answer though 😊

This is so helpful! And a question I’ve been working through for awhile now too.

On the thumbnail versions, how do you write the alt tag? Or is the URL you shared an example of the ’thumbnail’?

Helle, Louise.
We created a page with the full-size version of the infographic and then a detailed description underneath it. Then, we link to the infographic either with a thumbnail or smaller image with a link to view in full size with detailed description or with a text link. On the infographic page, we have an option to return to the page with the full report (our infographics are generally in a bigger presentation).

We’re still working on implementation so have catch-up and training on our web team to get the rest of them on the site coded properly, but one example of how we’ve done it so far is at

Hello everyone,

Quick question for anyone who can help. We have on our website a few downloadable infographics in jpg and pdf format. NVDA is unable to read any information about them.

The information is such that I think they requires a long description to describe the stats (as well as the text). Does anyone have any recommendations on how best to handle this? Should downloadable infographics be in pdf format with alt text set?

Apologies if this is all obvious, I am just learning!

Thanks, and with best wishes
Louise
