RE: Best practice for phone numbers

Before folks modify pronunciation with aria-label it is best to consider that some people use a refreshable braille display with a screen reader and this would add spaces between each number. Unfortunately, most screen readers do not fully support speech pronunciation markup yet so people resort to hacks.

Hey Everyone,

What's the best practice for presenting phone numbers? I know some screen readers will read them off awkwardly. This blog post suggests using an aria-label to correct this.<https://thatdevgirl.com/blog/accessibility-phone-number-formatting>

Would a phone link with or without an aria-label preferable? Does it make a difference?

  1. <a href="tel:678839XXXX" aria-label="Phone Number: 678.839.XXXX">678-839-XXXX</a>
  2. <a href="tel:678839XXXX">678-839-XXXX</a>

Also, is a phone link always preferable to plain text?

Thanks,

Jeremy
