Re: WAI-ARIA design pattern for media players

Sorry for the slow reply, Jon. I finally rediscovered the resource we used
when building in support for particular keystrokes for controlling Able
Player. It was the DHTML Style Guide:
http://access.aol.com/dhtml-style-guide-working-group/#mediaplayer

There's not a lot there, and I realize it's been superseded by more recent
W3C work, but it was current at the time so we implemented all of the
recommended keyboard shortcuts:

    Control + Alt + P = Pause/Play toggle
Control + Alt + S = Stop the player (May not be needed if Alt + P
performs the same functionality.)
    Control + Alt + M = Mute
    Control + Alt + U = Volume Up
    Control + Alt + D = Volume Down
Control + Alt 1 – 5 = Change the volume. 1 being the lowest volume and
5 being the loudest.
    Control + Alt + C Captions toggle.

Since the recommendation called for using Control + Alt as modifier keys,
we're using those by default but users can easily change them in the
Keyboard preferences dialog.

You asked about ARIA - that's a much larger topic. I'll see if I can carve
out some time to contribute to the WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices 1.1
discussions via the official channels.

Regards,
Terrill
