Is it possible for the user to visit a site that resizes the window*
and return to their original window size by using the back button, it
would seem not. :-(
My point being that the nearest sensible alternative is to maximise the
window, and this may well not suit the users intention or needs.

any help appreciated, in the meantime this remains a fairly serious
obstacle to implementing a no popup recommendation.

I'm changing my name to joan by deedpole I waste so much time on this

* I'm considering abandoning pop up windows, everyone smile please, but
many sites we link to resize windows for instance radio stations.
forcing the page into a larger window frequently looks ghastly, as the
background repeats all over the shop.
