You could probably try similar tricks with style sheets - this won't work with Lynx; the simplest way won't work with IE; and the counter will not be semantic content, so will only be there in the rendering. The script trick will not count non-scripting accesses. They also get the sample HTML fragment wrong, as they fail to encode the &'s in the href parameter! (The source of their instructions page should include &amp;cl= etc, because one level of processing will happen when the sample is displayed, and one level when the sample is used in anger.)
