Dear wcag3-motion and all interested AGWG members, Due to permission issue, I can not edit or comment on Google Docs scratchpad yet. Since we only have 15min (max) to review existing materials during the next meeting, I'd like to share some of my thoughts and additional materials/resources prior to it. Note: I use markdown syntax in this mail. 1. "COGA info for WCAG 3 sprint teams" document (only) lists distractions as harm from on-screen motion. Please note the context of that document is for people with cognitive and learning disabilities. Vestibular disorders are not covered in that document. 2. The ALA article "Designing Safer Web Animation For Motion Sensitivity" mentioned in "Animation caused by user interaction" wiki page provides some basic yet important, and easy-to-understand for designers, information on content animation which might cause harm. 3. Later, another ALA article "[Accessibility for Vestibular Disorders: How My Temporary Disability Changed My Perspective]( https://alistapart.com/article/accessibility-for-vestibular/)" echos the previous one, with valuable information such as `background-attachment: fixed` can cause harm too. 4. Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA) describe how human balance system works in its article "[Visually Induced Dizziness – “Supermarket Syndrome”]( https://vestibular.org/article/coping-support/living-with-a-vestibular-disorder/visually-induced-dizziness-supermarket-syndrome/)" to common readers in an easy-to-understand way. That article lists several symptoms of visually induced dizziness, such as: dizziness, unsteadiness, light-headedness, disorientation, nausea, vomiting, sweating, salivation (mouth watering), tiredness, and turning pale. 5. A medical paper "[Vertigo and dizziness from environmental motion: visual vertigo, motion sickness, and drivers' disorientation]( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24057825/)" covers visual vertigo and motion sickness. 6. The Committee for Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society is promoting development of an implementable classification of vestibular disorders and published several consensus documents. "[Classification of vestibular symptoms: Towards an international classification of vestibular disorders]( https://content.iospress.com/articles/journal-of-vestibular-research/ves00343)" contains International Classification of Vestibular Disorders I (ICVD-I) as an appendix. Note: another reference: [Overview of the International Classification of Vestibular Disorders](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26231270/) I believe that the triggered vertigo/dizziness, especially visually-induced ones triggered by a complex, distorted, large field or moving visual stimulus, are highly related to the wcag3-motion subgroup. We should notice that ICVD distinguished visually-induced vertigo/dizziness from motion sickness, in which the predominant symptom is a lasting, visceral feeling of nausea. Other kinds of triggered vertigo/dizziness may also relate to **motion**: positional (motion of human body), head-motion (motion of human head), sound-induced (motion of sound transmitting medium/particle), and orthostatic (motion of human body). I feel maybe these should be excluded. 7. Another ICVD consensus document "[Motion sickness diagnostic criteria: Consensus Document of the Classification Committee of the Bárány Society]( https://content.iospress.com/articles/journal-of-vestibular-research/ves200005)" presents diagnostic criteria and clinical features for motion sickness, visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), motion sickness disorder (MSD), and VIMS disorder (VIMSD). Hope these external resources help us determine the user stories and functional needs we intend to cover in the upcoming meetings. Looking forward to meeting with you on Monday!
