Re: Absent or null alt on img within figure element

Thanks Laura for those pointers. Yes browser-AT support is generally lagging but it does seem to work fine with Firefox and JAWS.
The figure is exposed as a grouping element and the figcaption does correctly work as a label or legend for the figure element.
The figcaption should not be regarded as the mechanism for providing text alt for an image within the figure or even when an image is its only content.
This is the point of this thread or the question posed up top.
Thanks,
Sailesh

 Hi David, Sailesh, and
 all,

 Steve's June 15,
2015 report [1] states the following regarding
 figcaption support.

 * IE: provides no semantic information via
 accessibility APIs.
 * Chrome, Firefox:
exposes element as IA2 caption role and the element
name as an IA2 object attribute.
 * Firefox: exposes the figcaption content as an
 accessible name for
 its parent figure.
*Safari has a figcaption bug [2]

 Powermapper tests results:
causes problems in 5 screen reader /
 browser
 combinations. [3]

 Best
 Regards,
 Laura
