Right I caught it at the end of the definition but not the beginning. So it should be sign language interpretation translation of spoken words (including paralinguistics) into a language that uses a simultaneous combination of handshapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body, and facial expressions to convey meaning rather than sound. Is a laugh/laughter a spoken word? I was under the impression that auditory sounds other than 'spoken words' are also communicated interpretation. -----Original Message----- From: Gregg Vanderheiden Sent: Dec 20, 2005 11:50 AM To: w3c-wai-gl@w3.org Subject: Sign language interpretation definition Our current definition .. sign language interpretation Providing the translation and meaning of spoken words into specific gestures, hand positions, and hand movements. .. doesn't quite make sense. It says "Translation and meaning". What is translation if it isn't meaning/?? Also sign language is more than hands. How about: sign language interpretation translation of spoken words into a language that uses a simultaneous combination of handshapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body, and facial expressions to convey meaning rather than sound.
