Introducing myself

Hi All,

For those who don’t know me I worked for W3C a few years back and had the absolute pleasure and privilege to work on EOWG. I moved onto work in the Scottish Government and had a slightly broader remit than just accessibility. I am now the Head of Accessibility in the Digital Directorate of the Scottish Government – which sounds grand but doesn’t come with the massive team I might like. Prior to all that I have worked as a service designer, user researcher, usability consultant, developer (in many various guises), and chiropractor. Not necessarily in that order.

My interest in accessibility began when I was working as a developer for Blackwell’s Online Bookshop over 20 years ago. I honestly can’t even remember why I picked up the baton, but since then I have been waving it about like a loon and advocating accessibility and inclusion in all things.

I am also part of the team that runs Accessibility Scotland<https://accessibility.scot/>. We aspire to be able to help raise awareness and skills on accessibility within Scotland and are in our 4th year of running an annual conference. We try to run regular meetups around Scotland as well but we are a bit rubbish at that. This year’s conference has a rough theme of Accessibility and Ethics and is on the 25th October if anyone happens to be in Edinburgh.

I live and work in Edinburgh. I have two children, who generally stay quiet during calls. I did have two cats who have sadly passed away who didn’t stay quiet during calls. I have two new cats… whether they stay quiet is yet to be determined.

Lovely to be here again,

Kevin
