Loyola College is one of the leading colleges of our nation. At Loyola we
look at education differently. We do not believe in the Quantity of
knowledge but in the quality and we practice our belief by not limiting
learning to the classroom alone but also providing the students as many
opportunities as possible to gain some much needed knowledge and experience.
Being a top college, our aim is to provide the opportunities and
infrastructure to all our students and help them become good human beings
for others.

At Loyola, we have over 78 differently abled students who have come to us
with dreams and aspirations of overcoming their disability and developing
into better individuals. In order to help them on the road to realizing
their dreams, we have developed a Model Resource Center for the Differently
Abled with the help of the Government. The aim of this Resource Center is to
provide these deserving students the platform to grow and develop on par
with others.

The Resource Center for the Differently Abled was established in 2006 and
has always worked tirelessly for the benefits of the differently abled
students of the college. The Resource Center has organized several workshops
and seminars on various topics with the help of several high quality
resource persons to educate the underprivileged members of our society about
the various opportunities that are available to them and also help them
overcome their disability. With the help of a few computers and other
equipments available, the Resource Center has been serving the differently
abled students of the college successfully over the past three years. This
year, the Resource Center plans to expand its influence and with a little
help from the Government and the support of the College Authorities, the
Resource Center has been moved to a more spacious location and has been
renovated with a lot of new facilities.

The inauguration of the Tamil Nadu Model Resource Center for the Differently
Abled will be held on Tuesday, the 1st of September 2009 and thereafter the
newly renovated Resource Center will be hosting its first program, A
Workshop on “Web Resources: Internet and Web Textbooks “ for the differently
abled. To make this occasion more meaningful, we have invited Honorable D.
Napoleon , the Minister of State for Social Justice as the chief guest who
would do the honors of inaugurating the Model Resource Center and also the
Workshop which will then be taken over by the speakers of the day, Shri K
Ramachandran, Manager – Corporate Communications, Cognizant Technology
Solutions and Worth Trust who will be holding a presentation on Bookshare.

The main purpose of this presentation would be to create awareness about
Bookshare, an online library for the blind and print handicapped. Bookshare
is the world’s largest library for the blind and print handicapped it
provides books to the blind in accessible formats and in recent times, the
library has also started providing books for the Indian readers too.
Bookshare is a venture of a US based firm and today it also has many Indian
based publications like Scholastic, Seth Publications, Sagithya Academy,
etc. linked with it. The library allows its members to download the books in
formats that could be played on computers, mp3 players and also Daisy
players.

With all these promised opportunities and facilities, we look to make this
program a grand success and we look forward to the support of everyone
involved in it. Under the guidance of the best Samaritan & principal Rev Dr.
Albert Muthumalai S. J., Prof J Jerald Inico is organising this program to
held the Differently Abled students.
