Hi Justin, As far as I know, yes it originated from the WAI-ARIA work but it is defined more generically in this document. The role attribute can be used to add role semantics to the markup, for example to declare that the <UL> contains a "navigation". This document defines several such generic roles (as listed in section 4), and WAI-ARIA defines additional ones that are more relevant to accessibility.
