February 2005

Late regrets - I'm not feeling well tonight.

Outreach:

1. NILS ran two more successful workshops this week in Canberra
(http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/workshops/0505-canb.html). We streamed the
participants into those with less and those with more technical knowledge
(e.g. managers vs developers) which worked well and allowed more focused
discussion at the appropriate level during the respective days. Next week we
are conducting a training workshop in Adelaide for the South Australian
State Government.

2. NILS (with our co-developer Jun from Japan) released a colour contrast
checking tool last week -
http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/contrast_analyser/index.html. Any
feedback welcome.

Revised section 2.c.

EOWG:

Calling logistics and an agenda for our 18 February 2005 teleconference
follow.

READINGS:
Please review the information below before the meeting and have any comments
prepared in advance.

AGENDA:

1. Outreach updates (brief)
- please send to EOWG mailing list in advance, note any trends or issues for
EOWG discussion

2. WAI Site Redesign

2.a. Minor changes in information architecture
- see Site Map: http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/sitemap.html
- CHANGE: removed top level "Guidelines and Resources", moved up to top
level:
   * Guidelines and Techniques
   * Support Materials
- CHANGE: added About WAI > Mission and Organization (moved text from top
level page for consistency)
   (http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/about.html)
- CHANGE: tweaked static navigation (at bottom of nav bar):
   * WAI Site Map
   * Help with WAI Site
   * Contacting WAI
   * WAI Translations
   * Search

2.b. Simplified navigation interaction design
- previous prototypes had [+] and [-] icons before the navigation items, for
example:
   * http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/implement.html has the boxes without the
+ and -
- recommending simpler navigation interaction, a few sample pages:
   * http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/
   * http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/gettingstarted/Overview.html
   * http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/intro/accessibility.php
   * http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/resources.html
   * http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/implement.html
   * http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/groups.html

2.c. Some specifics
NOTE: We still plan to refine the visual design. However, we might not get
significant visual design revisions before the next round of usability
testing - thus the opportunity for brief comment on some specifics below
(even though they may change later).
- some options for indicating "parent" node (that is, there are sub nodes
underneath it):
   * no indication: http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/implement.html
   * ellipsis (...) after: http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/e-implement.html
   * >> after: http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/a-implement.html
- some options for additional indication of current page/node:
   * arrow on right: http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/p-implement.html
   * arrow before: http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/h-implement.html
- matching menu items with annotated list items
   * just navigation words bold:
http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/implement.html
   * all bold: http://w3.org/2004/09/wai-nav/v7/h-implement.html
