Dear W3C Public Newsletter Subscriber, The 2014-10-06 version of the W3C Public Newsletter is online: http://www.w3.org/News/Public/pnews-20141006 A simplified plain text version is available below. Ian Jacobs, W3C Communications Team ----------------------------------- W3C Turns 20 1 October 2014 | Archive http://www.w3.org/blog/news/archives/4110 [] This month W3C celebrates its 20th anniversary. In a 1994 press release about the launch of W3C, Director Tim Berners-Lee explained, “The decision to form the consortium came at the urging of many firms investing increasing resources into the Web, whether in creation of software products, selling information, or for sharing information within their own companies, with business partners and the public at large.” Twenty years on, the W3C community is actively building an Open Web Platform for application development that has the unprecedented potential to enable developers to build sophisticated interactive experiences that are available on any device. Pursuing a vision of one Web available to all, 400 Members, thousands of individuals in Working and Interest Groups, nearly 4500 people in Community and Business Groups, and many more subscribed to public mailing lists power today’s W3C community. W3C thanks all of you for 20 years of creating, implementing, and supporting open standards for the Web. http://www.w3.org/20/ http://newsoffice.mit.edu/1994/lcs-1019 http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee http://www.w3.org/Consortium/Member/List http://www.w3.org/Consortium/activities http://www.w3.org/community/ http://open-stand.org/ Please join us to discuss the future of the Web and W3C at the W3C 20th Anniversary Symposium and Gala Dinner on 29 October in Santa Clara, California. This specification defines the syntax and semantics of XSLT 3.0, a language for transforming XML documents into other XML documents. A transformation in the XSLT language is expressed in the form of a stylesheet. A stylesheet is made up of one or more well-formed XML documents conforming to the Namespaces in XML Recommendation. Comments are welcome through 26 November. This document describes requirements for pagination and layout of books in latin languages, based on the tradition of print book design and composition. It is hoped that these principles can inform the pagination of digital content as well, and serve as a reference for the CSS Working Group and other interested parties. This work was inspired by the Requirements for Japanese Text Layout. This document specifies two profiles of Timed Text Markup Language 1: a text-only profile and an image-only profile. These profiles are intended to be used across subtitle and caption delivery applications worldwide, thereby simplifying interoperability, consistent rendering and conversion to other subtitling and captioning formats. The text profile is a superset of TTML Simple Delivery Profile for Closed Captions (US). The review period ends on 27 October 2014. This includes discussing basic privacy UI features that will, on the long run, create a user experience that loops with user expectations. We expect certain controls and dashboards in a car. Perhaps we can create a similar clarity for the privacy dashboard of our devices. The Workshop focus will be on users: user experience, user behavior and how we can offer controls that provide the necessary transparency of privacy-affecting interactions. We will also discuss how developers can meet users' privacy needs on the Web, including what APIs are necessary for user privacy.
