Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) Profile for limiting usage of dynamic
memory is a W3C Recommendation

   9 September 2014 | Archive

   http://www.w3.org/blog/news/archives/4050

The EXI Working Group published the " Efficient XML Interchange
(EXI) Profile for limiting usage of dynamic memory" as W3C
Recommendation. EXI 1.0 is a very efficient format to represent
an XML Information Set. It is highly customizable to fit the
need of diverse use cases, ranging from B2B applications down
to embedded-systems use. It satisfies compactness and
processing efficiency requirements, while preserving all the
information contained in the XML InfoSet. As a representation
of XML, it is by design naturally extensible.

   http://www.w3.org/XML/EXI
   http://www.w3.org/TR/2014/REC-exi-profile-20140909/

EXI is able to handle deviation or extensions from the Schema
in use very efficiently thanks to its self-augmenting grammar
system. However, This sometimes poses a challenge for
low-memory systems, such as sensors and microcontrollers,
embedded in power grids, vehicles, or other small devices.

This EXI Profile addresses this issue by permitting
applications to define profiles that are interoperable and best
suit systems memory constraints, while maintaining its full
   extensibility.

Working Draft of "CSS Display Module Level 3." This module
describes how the CSS formatting box tree is generated from the
document element tree and defines the display and box-suppress
properties that control it. CSS is a language for describing

W3C Invites Implementations of Vibration API; HTML Media Capture

   9 September 2014 | Archive

   http://www.w3.org/blog/news/archives/4046

The Device APIs Working Group invites implementation of two
   Candidate Recommendations:

   http://www.w3.org/2009/dap/
     * Vibration API. This specification defines an API that
provides access to the vibration mechanism of the hosting
device. Vibration is a form of tactile feedback.
     * HTML Media Capture. This specification defines an HTML form
extension that facilitates user access to a device’s media
capture mechanism, such as a camera, or microphone, from
       within a file upload control.

W3C Invites Implementations of CSS Backgrounds and Borders Module
Level 3

   9 September 2014 | Archive

   http://www.w3.org/blog/news/archives/4048

The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) Working Group invites
implementation of the Candidate Recommendation of "CSS
Backgrounds and Borders Module Level 3." CSS is a language for
describing the rendering of structured documents (such as HTML
and XML) on screen, on paper, in speech, etc. This draft
contains the features of CSS level 3 relating to borders and
backgrounds. It includes and extends the functionality of CSS
level 2, which builds on CSS level 1. The main extensions
compared to level 2 are borders consisting of images, boxes
with multiple backgrounds, boxes with rounded corners and boxes
with shadows. This module replaces two earlier drafts: CSS3
Backgrounds and CSS3 Border. Learn more about the Style
   Activity.
