=Professor in Data Analytics and Professor in Data Management (2
permanent academic posts)=
Linked to our strategic research priority area of Realising potential
through data and enabling technologies, University of Galway invites
applications for two closely linked Professorships in our Data Science
Institute (DSI) in the College of Science and Engineering.

Data Science, including data analytics, is a thematic priority
research area for the College of Science and Engineering. Through the
DSI and our schools (especially the schools of Computer Science;
Engineering; and Mathematical and Statistical Sciences), as well as
other Research Institutes and centres, NUI Galway currently holds a
strong international reputation in specific research areas of Data
Science and Data Analytics and in translating this research into
strong teaching programmes. The concurrent recruitment of a Professor
in Data Analytics and Professor in Data Management is a strategic
opportunity to further expand significantly this capability and
expertise, open it up to new and emerging areas, and lead the
continued growth of this research priority area in the University.
Both of the Professorships are senior academic positions of key
strategic importance. Specifically, the successful appointees will
provide strategic research leadership to the DSI in the field of data
analytics/data management.

The successful appointees are expected to enrich University of
Galway’s track record in the field of data analytics and data
management by:
• leading internationally-recognised research and innovation
• developing strategic partnerships with industry and international
research centres of esteem
• attracting high quality students and early career researchers to
University of Galway
• translating research into strong teaching programmes.

The Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, is an SFI (Science
Foundation Ireland) research centre and is one of the largest data
analytics centres in Europe. It is co-led by four institutions: Dublin
City University, University College Cork, University College Dublin
and University of Galway, with additional partner institutions in
Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin, Tyndall and the
University of Limerick. The Insight SFI Research Centre for Data
Analytics undertakes high impact research in data analytics that has
significant benefits for people, industry, and society by enabling
better decision making. Insight supports over 450 researchers across
areas such as the Fundamentals of Data Science, Sensing and Actuation,
Scaling Algorithms, Model Building, Multi Modal Analysis, Data
Engineering and Governance, Decision Making and Trustworthy AI. This
research can be applied across areas such as Health and Human
Performance, Enterprise and Services, Smart Communities and IoT, and
Sustainability and Operations. Since its inception in 2013 it has
attracted over 150 million euro in funding awards from Government,
Industry and EU programmes.

One of the key roles of the Professorships is to further develop
strategic research areas and strategic research partnerships aligned
to Insight at the University of Galway.

Data and the science, analysis, management and application of data is,
by nature, multi-disciplinary, and therefore, the Professors will
provide leadership in engaging with multidisciplinary research
involving colleagues from across the university to reinforce existing
collaborations especially in the areas of sustainability, digital
humanities, healthcare, and policy-making. As well as their role in
the DSI, each appointee will be a member of academic staff in a school
within the College, and will be expected to contribute to the teaching
of programmes in your School of primary affiliation.
We are seeking to appoint two Professors in the areas of Data
Analytics and Data Management. The successful appointees will each be
an established research leader in one or more of the following areas:
Data Engineering and Governance; Data Analysis; Knowledge Graphs;
Machine Learning; Natural Language Processing; Statistical Data
Science; Computational Statistics; Statistical Learning; Data
Visualisation, Simulation and Discovery Informatics; and Trustworthy
and Ethical Data Science.

The successful appointees will have relevant academic and research
leadership enabling her/him to:
• Contribute to the research leadership of the national Insight SFI
Research Centre for Data Analytics with counterparts in UCD, UCC and
DCU
• Lead the development, growth and expansion of the DSI portfolio of
research programmes and partnerships, including partnerships with
industry and other national Research Centres (including Lero, Confirm,

academic strategic partners associated with the DSI and Insight
