Dear Semantic Web Community, the universities of Bielefeld and Paderborn have founded the Joint Artificial Intelligence Institute (JAII) [1]. We would like to invite you to the kick-off event that will take place on September 15th from 10-12 CEST. The kick-off event will feature an invited talk by Prof. Frank van Harmelen (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) with the title "How to build AI systems that both learn and reason?". The abstract for the talk is below. You can register for the event here: https://uni-bielefeld.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJElc-GurT8sHdQ24Pw3Ko6vXdt-sjY6okJm We look forward to seeing you at the kick-off event. Best regards, Philipp Cimiano, Axel Ngonga and Barbara Hammer (Directors of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center) [1] https://jaii.eu/ Abstract: Truly intelligent systems will have to both learn from experience and reason with acquired knowledge. Progress in the two fields of knowledge representation and machine learning has lead to an explosion of publications on how to build hybrid, "neuro-symbolic" systems that combine the techniques from this hitherto separate fields, with hundreds of new proposals appearing in the literature in recent years. In this talk I will describe a modular approach to such neuro-symbolic systems that allows us to re-interpret and systematize this rapidly growing literature on "3rd wave AI" system. -- Prof. Dr. Philipp Cimiano Head of Semantic Computing Group Cognitive Interaction Technology Center (CITEC) Faculty of Technology Bielefeld University Phone: +49 (0) 521 106 12249
