Open Position as a PhD Student in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning

Open Position as a PhD Student at Universität Stuttgart, Germany – Apply until May 15th!
Research Task: Knowledge Representation and Reasoning

Location: Universität Stuttgart, Institute for Parallel and Distributed Systems, Analytic Computing Department, Universitätsstr. 32, 70569 Stuttgart, Germany

Analytic Computing is a new team and the nucleus for a new Institute for Artificial Intelligence at Universität Stuttgart, Germany. The new institute is endowed by the Cyber Valley Initiative that funds and joins AI research at the Universities of Stuttgart and Tübingen and the Max-Planck-Institute for Intelligent Systems. Our research interests include foundations of knowledge graphs, machine learning, natural language processing, intelligent interactive systems, as well as reflection on Web, AI and society.

We invite applications as researcher for a full-time position as a

             PhD student (100% TV-L E 13)

Your research will involve the development of knowledge representation and reasoning methods for mapping between different representations as they are viewed over time by different users. One focus is the development of methods for detecting and repairing inconsistencies and constraint violations across these different views.

The KR&R methods will be developed for the use case of architectural design and construction. Thus, it involves the development of core ontologies for architectural design processes and representation methods that allow reasoning about design processes at different levels of abstraction. The position offers some flexibility and stronger focus can be given to more fundamental or more application-oriented questions dependent on your interests. The duration of the position is limited to 3 years.

What We Will Offer

We provide you with a friendly, but challenging interdisciplinary research environment and support your academic career towards accomplishing your Ph.D. You will join a dedicated team of 2 researchers in the field of knowledge representation and reasoning. The targeted work will happen in collaboration with a researcher who is an architect.

What You Will Contribute

You will work on core ontologies for architecture, engineering and construction, on formal logic operators that aggregate and translate between different stages of the engineering process and corresponding formal reasoning methods. You will advise and tutor bachelor and master students in the computer and data science programs of the department in topics related to your research.

Eligibility

Applicants for the position are required to have an MSc in computer science or in a related field. You should possess knowledge in logics and/or ontologies and/or formal artificial intelligence. First experience with KR methods like knowledge graphs, semantic web technology or logical knowledge representation methods is also required for the position. Good social and communication skills are a must.

Salary

The salary amounts to German TV-L E 13, which starts at approx. 50,000 Euro income per year (before taxation). The position is open as of July 1, 2021.
