(apologies for cross-postings) Early Career Symposium (ECS) at the 10th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS 2018), Cape Town, South Africa, 17-21 September 2018 website <http://fois2018.cs.uct.ac.za/?page_id=236> Scope The international conference Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS) <http://fois2018.cs.uct.ac.za/>is one of the leading conferences in ontology engineering. FOIS aims to promote interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science, as well as in the applications of ontological analysis to conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering, knowledge management, information-systems development, library and information science, scientific research, and semantic technologies in general. The FOIS 2018 conference, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, September 17-21, 2018, will host an Early Career Symposium <http://fois2018.cs.uct.ac.za/?page_id=236> (ECS). This event is designed to provide an opportunity for graduate students to present their work at one of the leading conferences in formal ontology and to get first-hand feedback and mentorship from senior researchers in their field. It will also allow participants to network with other (early career) scientists in the broad field of ontology. Topics of interest include all topics relevant to the interdisciplinary field of ontology as outlined in the topics of interest <http://fois2018.cs.uct.ac.za/?page_id=8>for FOIS 2018. Format The ECS will be held as a poster session within the main FOIS conference. The poster session will be opened by a lightning talks session, during which each participant has the opportunity to advertise his/her work in a 5 minutes speech in front of the general audience of the conference. Each participant will be assigned a senior researcher as mentor, who will provide substantial feedback to his/her work. Moreover, a PhD Lounge will allow early career scientists to meet and discuss their work with each other, their mentors and other senior researchers. Application Instructions The ECS is open to students at the Masters and Doctoral Level that have not defended their thesis before the ECS Submission deadline. Candidates must submit a short description of their research project and an up-to-date CV (as one pdf-file). Submissions will be reviewed by selected members of the FOIS Program Committee. Final submission is via <https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=fois2014>EasyChair (see submission instructions <http://fois2018.cs.uct.ac.za/?page_id=236>). Template for submission. The template (link <http://fois2018.cs.uct.ac.za/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/ECS_FOIS2018-1.doc>) is meant to be used as general reference to organize the description of the submitted research project in different sections with specific contents. Latex can be also used. Make sure that the submission is in pdf format and includes both the research description and the CV. The abstracts (400 words), included in the project description, will be published as part of the FOIS proceedings (published by CEUR). A limited number of scholarships will be available to support students participation. Further information will be soon available on the website <http://fois2018.cs.uct.ac.za/?page_id=236>. Important dates June 30, 2018: submission deadline July 21, 2018: notification of acceptance August 5, 2018: Submission of camera-ready version Contact For all queries about the Early Career Symposium, please contact the organizers at ecsfois2018@gmail.com.
