Semantic and Cogntiive Interaction Technologies for Education

Semantic and Cognitive Interaction Technologies for Education

The Cognitive Interaction Technology Excellence Center (CITEC) at
Bielefeld University hosts over 250 researchers working on fields as
varied as robotics, cognitronics, semantic technologies, human machine
interaction, machine learning, computer graphics, psychology, biology,
sport science.

CITEC is seeking to intensify its research in the field of cognitive
interaction and semantic technology for education. The goal is to
develop next generation technology that can support lifelong learning by
humans. CITEC seeks to develop a new generation of intelligent coaches
that are characterized by the fact that they have a deep understanding
of subject matters and of the needs and progress of learners. Further,
they should be able to give feedback in real-time and monitor students’
performance as a basis to develop plans on how to foster their progress.
The intelligent coaches that CITEC seeks to develop have the following
characteristics: they are interactive and engaging, they are
personalized long-term companions, and they effectively use different
multimodal channels to communicate and engage with the learner.

CITEC is looking for a motivated postdoctoral research fellow that can
support the research on cognitive interaction technology for education.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in computer science or related
fields and have expertise in as many as possible of the research areas
mentioned below:

- IT-supported interactive learning and teaching concepts
- knowledge discovery and mining for educational applications
- multimodal interaction in the context of educational systems
- personalization and adaptivity in educational applications
- applications of semantic technologies in education
- serious games or games with a purpose for education

Applicants are expected to have strong skills in at least two key
technologies mentioned below:
- database technology
- knowledge discovery and data mining
- human machine interfaces and user interaction
- big data analytics
- visualization
- multimodal interaction

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the
definition of a research agenda in the field of CIT for education and
contribute to develop a research agenda that different research groups
at CITEC can contribute to. The following skills will be expected from
the candidate:

- ability to perform high-quality research, as demonstrated by
scientific publications
- ability to define a research agenda
- strong analytical skills
- strong communicative skills
- ability to quickly get acquainted with new areas and fields of
application
- willingness to work in an interdisciplinary research environment.

Knowledge of German is not required for the position, but a plus.

The salary is based on Germany's academic salary level TV-L 13. The
entry level salary amounts to approx. 4.500 EUR per month (gross income).

The appointment will be for a full time position for a period of 18
months starting from April 1st , 2016. The contract can be renewed
after the initial period depending on the successful evaluation of the
candidate and on funds availability.

Applications including a CV, PhD certificate, university degree
certificate, list of publications and letter of motivation should be
sent to Prof. Dr. Philipp Cimiano until February 21st at the very latest.
