Dear Christopher, I can definitely not attend, but am very much interested in this issue. We are as part of Project Paradigm working on redefining the implementation of Agenda 21, the blue print for sustainable development in such a fashion that we redefine resilience as an integral part of the sustainable development paradigm in such a way that local sustainable, development, regional and international sustainable development are defined in terms of interconnectedness in resilient grid for technologies. By now defining economic development and social development taking into account ecological factors we can redefine overall economic activities in terms of how they comply with "resilient grid technologies" criteria. If they do, then automatically they fulfill sustainable development criteria set by Agenda 21. This approach is ONLY possible by using Semantic Web technology. It is not entirely new and actually builds on SAHANA, UN Global Pulse, and CARRI/ResilientUS.org. What is different in our approach is that we do not employ the "disaster" as trigger for resilience but criteria dictated by Agenda 21 to allow continuity in what constitutes sustainable development for "future generations" as first defined in the 1970 UN Brundlandt report defining sustainable development. Can you provide a detailed listing of all people currently involved, starting in the UK? I would very much like to organize a hackaton for resilience early next year somewhere in Europe, and the UK sounds like a good venue to me. The hackathon includes projects involving python, linked data and semantic technologies. ------- As witnessed during recent disasters such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan, social media and Web 2.0 technologies—as well as the expanding availability of publicly available structured data—are beginning to dramatically affect all aspects of disaster management. Such technologies permit communication and coordination in ways that were not possible even a few years ago. Geographically dispersed volunteers now participate in large-scale online collective activities. Official organizations have new channels through which to interact with the public, and they have access to new (and large-scale) providers of both information and services. Aston University and the University of Warwick are happy to announce the Hackathon for Disaster Response, a 2-day event to bring together software developers and emergency management experts to hack out solutions to disaster-related problems. We will focus specifically on data available via social media, and on structured data (open data, linked data) available from a variety of sources. This event is sponsored as part of the Disaster 2.0 project ------- Full details here: http://h4d2.eu/ Christopher ***************************************************** Operations and Information Management Group, Aston Business School, Aston University, Birmingham, B4 7ET, UNITED KINGDOM Web: http://www.aston.ac.uk/~brewstca/ Tel: +44 121 204 3233 Skype: christopherbrewster SkypeIn (UK): +44 (20) 8144 0088 ***************************************************** People don't realise the system has actually collapsed - George Soros
