Workshop Overview

This workshop aims to unlock a new paradigm in Semantic Web research, and even in KR research in general, by adding a quantitative research paradigm to the traditionally predominant qualitative logic-based paradigm. This is motivated in part by the significant growth in Semantic Web data, including ontologies and Linked Data, over recent years. To efficiently manage the vast quantities of knowledge and data on the Semantic Web, we need theories and tools to address questions like:

- How can we measure knowledge?
- How are these measurements different from measurements of information?
- How can we efficiently store knowledge?
- How can we efficiently and accurately transform knowledge on noisy channels like the Web?
- How can we measure the quality of ontologies and other forms of knowledge?
- How can we determine the quality of approximate methods for inference, similarity, soundness, completeness, etc.?
- How can such quantitative formalization help the engineering and realization of the Semantic Web?

Topics of Interest

We welcome both papers that present technical advances as well as papers that discuss methodological issues. We are open to papers from authors in communities that have a longer tradition in quantitative methods, such as machine learning, information retrieval, graph analysis, network science, statistics, etc.

Original, high-quality work related (but not limited) to one of the following research topics is welcome:

- semantic extensions to Information Theory
- semantic compression
- semantic similarity
- Linked Data analytics
- utility in the Semantic Web
- ontology metrics
- statistics to characterize and tune the performance of knowledge bases and inference engines

Paper Submission

We invite Technical Papers (not to exceed 12 pages) and Position Papers (not to exceed 4 pages). Submissions must not be published nor must they be submitted for publication elsewhere. Submissions will be handled using the EasyChair system at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=semquant2012. Papers must be PDF in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) format (see http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0). Accepted papers will be published in a special volume of the CEUR workshop proceedings (http://ftp.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/Publications/CEUR-WS/). At least one author must register to present an accepted paper.
