Linked Data with GI - Workshop and Tutorial, GISRUK 2011 University of Portsmouth 26th April 2011 The Linked Data Web is rapidly growing part of the Web that enables data to be published and interlinked in much the same was as documents are currently published and linked. Linked Data is increasingly being used to published Geographic Information including Geonames, OpenStreetMap (as Linked Open GeoData) and Ordnance Survey data. In the US and the UK the respective governments are encouraging government departments and agencies to publish their data as Linked Data. The value and advantages of Linked Data are also being recognised within the scientific community and the cultural heritage sector, with an increasing number of catalogues being exposed as Linked Data. For those working with Geographic Information Linked Data will become increasingly important. Producers of GI need to understand how to organise, describe and publish Linked Data; those wishing to use GI need to understand how to search for and consume Linked Data. This workshop and tutorial is designed to help raise awareness and understanding of Linked Data. In addition it is designed to increase the community of practitioners, enable sharing of knowledge and thus to accelerate the use of Linked Data. The Tutorial will provide: } An overview of Linked Data; } Describe the potential advantages; } Present worked through Examples; } Enable current publishers and users to describe what they have done and achieved. Who should attend: } Anyone who currently publishes or uses data that has a geographic component. } Current Linked Data practitioners - share your knowledge and learn from others.
