decoupling of the location and identity functions of IP addresses is the essence of HIP

 <http://www.google.com/search?q=hip+ip+address>

so much for the domain name being the identity, and the IP-address the location..

it uses DHTs for mapping host IDs to their current IP address, or can propogate updates over an existing open connection

i view this as a vast improvement over top down SAICNetSolVerisign cartel, for technical and economic reasons

i think Bittorrent, or Google GFS are the right idea. but i dont see how extending that to the web is feasable without IPV6 and the death of NAT

im not sure _anyone_ is big enough to massively accelerate change to IPV6, but even the players who might be do not seem interested in end to end connectivity, they want you coming to them, whether this is Google or NBC or ESPN or even 4chan... if not for 'control' of information, for advertising revenues.

to backup the addressing we need serving. you see Google adding SQLite databases to browser, but not web server. a web browser serving some sort of DHT-findable ETag (or URI) addressable cache over HTTP is a first step . the web server is almost there in the browser for cache (eg in Gears) but its only for QoS reasons and doenst change the distribution paradigm at all

the common scenario for me is at least one device i own is generally powered up, and one isnt, one of someone i trust is. i mean a phone, a netbook or notebook, a friends phone, whatever. given the low volume of references im interested (and ability to reduce it via URIs) a world without massive datacenters burning massive amounts of electricity and blighting the landscape is definitely doable

from the first link, youll notice i think DNS has already been superseded by google for my needs.

its always easier to just type in one or two words to GOOG than remember if its a .blogspot. a .com. a .free.fr or who knows..

so im interested in hearing ideas on how something like that could be replicateed without google at the center. impossible due to gaming?
