Dear colleagues, Apologies for hijacking the list to advertise an Engineering Doctorate position we're sponsoring at Southampton University, within the Web Science Research Initiative. Please forward to anyone who may be interested in this studentship. Dr Cathy Dolbear Senior Research Scientist, Ordnance Survey Research www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/research *********************************************************************** Engineering Doctorate in Web Science, sponsored by Ordnance Survey. Applications are invited for an Engineering Doctorate sponsored by Ordnance Survey at the Web Science Research Initiative, based at Southampton University's School of Electronics and Computer Science. The Web Science Research Initiative is concerned with the science of the future use and design of the World Wide Web, particularly the semantic web. Its goal is to both understand the growth of the Web and to create approaches that allow new powerful and more beneficial patterns to occur. Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency of Britain, is investigating the use of semantic technologies to improve integration of our data with our customers, offer more flexible customised products and to enable our data to be discovered and linked on the semantic web. The aim of the research is to understand how Ordnance Survey should operate in the "web-scale" semantic environment. That is, stepping into a future world where the semantic web is a reality, and huge volumes of semantically-annotated and interlinked data are available on the web, to make predictions about how we should design our semantic data models and tools and how we should prioritise research to address the larger and more immediately important problems confronting us in this world. The primary research question to be answered in the project is: How can people find, use and query our data efficiently at web-scale? The Engineering Doctorate at Southampton University The EngD is a four-year doctoral research programme providing leading-edge business and technical expertise alongside doctoral-level research skills, thus equipping ambitious and able research engineers with the skills needed for a senior management position in engineering research. The EngD crucially involves a close link with a sponsoring company. REs spend at least half of the four years undertaking research into real industrial problems with the sponsoring company. Taught courses are normally undertaken during the first two years of the programme while students are based at the University. Courses include advanced-level engineering modules, MBA modules from the University's School of Management, and specially-designed generic skills courses.
