Afraid we don't know of any paper. The other approaches we considered
internally were (1) RDF List and (2) Wrapping annotations in another class.
We dropped them because of complexity and compatibility issues.

Thanks for the paper. Made a very good read, as your other use case (Formal
statements) is also bubbling up for us. As with regards to association
between 'annotates' and 'context' for multiple documents, we had looked at
similar ideas, but dropped them because we were unsure as to the complexity
costs to maintain backward compatibility. The idea has been put on a back
burner as we have been hoping to see the Annotea community get active again
to solve this.
