[Apologies for cross-postings] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Semantic Web User Interaction: Exploring HCI Challenges at CHI 2008. Florence, Italy. April 5, 2008. Papers due: 31st October, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This workshop seeks participation from CHI research and design communities, as well as Semantic Web researchers focused on user interaction techniques. It is the fifth in the Semantic Web User Interaction (SWUI) series, and the first to be organized for CHI. The workshop web site, with full details, is at: http://swui.webscience.org/SWUI2008CHI. Workshop Theme The Semantic Web is not a Web of documents, but a Web of structured and interlinked data. Creating interfaces for interacting with this data is difficult because there is no well-defined web "page" or homogeneous structure to the data. Creating data is at least as important as presenting it, so facilitating efficient and effective data entry is an important aspect of user interaction. This workshop seeks to identify key challenges in a usability research agenda for the Semantic Web and to explore the contributions that the CHI community can make to address them. Papers are invited on any relevant topic, including: * Case studies that can help inform the practical achievement of usable Semantic Web browsers and applications * New tools for collaboration, including ways of visualizing virtual organizations and relationships * New tools that use Semantic Web data to add or improve interface functionality * New interfaces for authoring content, ontologies and metadata * New approaches for defining or representing user context in ways that influence data seeking/use * Methodologies for the formative and summative evaluation of Semantic Web user interfaces * Methodologies for requirements gathering, design and development In addition, the Linking Open Data project has large interlinked data sets available that designers/researchers may wish to try as test sets for interface experiments. We encourage you to explore these resources. See http://esw.w3.org/topic/SweoIG/TaskForces/CommunityProjects/LinkingOpenData. Participating in the workshop: We are accepting three types of submissions, which are due by 31st October (see dates below). Acceptance of your submission is required for attendance at this workshop. 1. Case studies - describing projects and applications that present novel interaction approaches and include discussion of how users are involved in analysis, design, and evaluation. Where possible, demonstrations are encouraged. 2. Research papers - describing specific research activities in any area that relates to user interaction directly. Again, where possible, demonstrations are encouraged. 3. Position papers - articulating a user interaction or methodological position/issue that presents a contribution to workshop discussion, by which we are able to advance the subject overall. Papers that outline bridges/integration between disciplines are encouraged. All papers submitted will be reviewed by the workshop committee. Submissions and questions to: swui08chi@webscience.org. Submissions due: 31 October 2007, 5:00 PM PDT. Notification by: 28 November 2007 Workshop date: 5 April 2008 Organizers: * m.c. schraefel, University of Southampton, UK * Duane Degler, IPGems, USA * Jennifer Golbeck, University of Maryland, USA * Abraham Bernstein, University of Zurich, Switzerland * Lloyd Rutledge, CWI-INS2, The Netherlands For more information: The workshop website is: http://swui.webscience.org/SWUI2008CHI.
