With GRDDL (i.e. simple XSLT transformation for a microformat or XML vocabulary, see [1]) one can easily convert already existing microformat data to RDF. As for new data on the Web, if people can deploy RDF natively, use RDF a[2] (which has much of the benefits of microformats while being decentralized), or go through microformat process and create a GRDDL. If people use microformats instead of RDF, the blame lies on the SemWeb community for not maintaining easy ways to convert microformats to RDF and for not making SemWeb technologies as accessible or as easy-to-use as the microformat community. Yet I am confident the SemWeb community can make the strategic investments of time and energy needed to make the SemWeb both accessible and compatible with already existing microformat and XML data.
