The University of Mannheim is looking for 2 PhD Positions (BAT IIa German Salary Scale) The candidates will carry out work in the context of the "Knowledge-based Information Processing for Distributed Complex Applications" research group funded by the German Science Foundation under the Emmy-Noether Programm for scientific excellence. The positions are temporary with an initial duration of 3 years and an option of a 2 year extension in case of a successful review after 3 years. Candidates are expected to - carry out research in the thematic context of the research group and present the result at international conferences and workshops - cooperation with researchers in other European countries - write a PhD on a topic connected with the topic of the research group - support the development and organization of the research group - support teaching in the bachelor programs in computer science, in particular in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Semantic web technologies. We expect candidates to have a university degree in computer science or a related discipline, good programming skills as well as good knowledge of the English language in reading and writing. Experience in scientific work, e.g. as student assistant as well as proven knowledge in one of the following areas are of advantage: - logic-based knowledge representation, in particular ontologies and semantic web technologies - distributed systems, in particular information storage and retrieval in P2P systems We offer a competitive salary and interesting work in the context of a prestigious grant with the chance for personal development and a good integration in the semantic web research community.
