Together with the release of OpenLink Virtuoso Open Source Edition, http://virtuoso.openlinksw.com/wiki/main/Main OpenLink Software announces SPARQL and native triple store support. Virtuoso is a SQL database and virtual database with integrated SOAP and WS* protocols, DAV repository and BPEL engine. The new release adds SPARQL as an equal partner to SQL, to be freely substituted for and intermixed with SQL. SPARQL queries transparently translate to SQL and refer to special triple store tables kept in Virtuoso's database. Virtuoso's database offers low-level support for RDF, as in special data types and type cast semantics. The technical highlights of the implementation are discussed at: http://virtuoso.openlinksw.com/wiki/main/Main/VOSRDF There is an online demo based on the DAWG SPARQL test suite at http://demo.openlinksw.com/sparql_demo Future plans include mapping local and remote SQL tables into RDF for SPARQL querying of relational data, more SPARQL storage options, continued optimizations, introducing a fine grained security model and more. Virtuoso related developments and news are covered at the product blog, http://virtuoso.openlinksw.com/blog/
