Subject: [newsml-2] notes from the spring IPTC meeting

Hi,

It was a very interesting IPTC meeting here in Vancouver. Mixed weather but lively bar-sessions. And the active NAR WP members had a one-day face-to-face meeting just yesterday. I will detail the directions taken during this meeting in my next posts.

But first, a wrap-up of the sessions. The different IPTC WGs are ready to implement the News Architecture and prepare a major evolution of all IPTC standards. This encompasses news, sports and events markup, plus the representation and management of IPTC News Codes. Early May, a new phase will begin, and the updated draft Architecture will be used as a base for these developments. We know for sure now that SportsML will use the NewsItem as a wrapper for sports results and statistics, and the PackageItem as a way to convey sets of result Items. EventsML will create a specific Item for the representation of assignements, and think about using a Topic Item for defining / describing events.

In order to save time, some areas of the NAR will be left for a next phase. This encompasses rights and the publication components, plus the study of some specific kinds of partial dates. A very simple copyright notice and licence notice will be included in the first release.

Good news, the EBU (European Broadcast Union) is interested by NewsML 2. All European Broadcasters could eventually exchange video footage using NewsML 2 in the future.

Tim Bray was at the meeting for a presentation, and discussed the position of RSS and Atom in the syndication world, the apparition of a "long tail" of web publications, the new business models emerging from these technologies. The IPTC members believe in the complementarities of these initiatives with the NewsML 2 standard. By using NewsML 2 modules and syndication formats together, the main asset of the IPTC - the knowledge of effective ways to model, describe, exchange and process news - will be freely available for all those who need more than what simple syndication formats offer natively.

Best regards
