Thanks! It feels good not to be the only one puzzled about this.

The thread "died" on 23 Jan. 2001. Can anyone tell me what the final outcome
of this dispute is? The Recommendation isn't clear (not to me that is :-) )

As far as I understood it, rdf:about can be used in any place where you 
would use rdf:ID, no matter whether the value has been "defined" before 
or not.

In fact, I found a discussion[1] where it was suggested that you use 
only rdf:about, to make it simpler.
