RE: Hypermedia - Why

Hi David,

OK, I've been trying to come up with a principles document, a la XML, and later XLink on the wiki.
http://www.w3.org/community/xmlhypermedia/wiki/Main_Page

But they don't address the 'why', really.

I think XML needs hypermedia affordance vowels, so that as a web software developer, I can define a domain-specific vocabulary in any subset of the XML family of specifications,
using the domain-agnostic hypermedia vowels in my hypermedia affordances, and web component developers, especially clients, will be able to rely on the definitions of the vowels
and write their software to take advantage of the architectural style of the web, including URIs, content negotiation / representations, meaningful media types in message headers, and obviously, hypertext as the engine of application state. In the latter case, application/xml could be enough for a hypermedia application, whereas today, it is not sufficient because there is no hypermedia implied by that media type.

And even if you generously said, "xlink enables xlink:href", xlink is not implied by application/xml.

Hypermedia gurus, please step in!

Peter

Subject: Hypermedia - Why

I have read the first chapter to get an idea of HyperMedia. I have many questions ... but before that ...

I suggest a start is to have a discussion with the goal of documenting a "Why" statement.

First, however, I assume that the charter of this group is to generate a concrete proposal or specification ?
If that is not the case lets start there. What is our charter?

Then ... "Why".

Why do we want to do this.
What problem are we trying to solve that is not solved better by existing usage or standards
What is the hoped for impact or value add to society.
Why is this important enough to standardize ?
